Towns of Crete

The most popular region of the island and boasts exceptional archaeological treasures, significant coastal settlements, a series of picturesque villages, vast valleys with olive groves and vineyards. It hosts intense nightlife close by.

On the western side of the island, is dominated by the impressive White Mountains and its famous National Park. The city of Chania remains unaltered from the time of the Venetian Rule.

Laying in central Crete, Rethymnon is a radiant mix of old and new. It has a young and lively nightlife blended with ancient monuments from long-gone days and differing cultures.

Nestled alongside beautiful Mirabello Bay (the largest natural bay in Crete), on the northeast coast in East Crete. The prefecture is well-known for its interesting archaeological sites, as well as the one-of-a-kind in Europe Palm Tree Forest at Vai beach.
WHY CRETE ISLAND?

The cradle of European Civilization, Crete is the largest island in Greece, and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean Sea with remnants of brilliant civilizations, rugged mountains, endless beaches and turquoise seas, charming towns and villages, and stunning countryside. Crete is the place where myths look like history and history is like a myth. It is a small universe teeming with beauties and treasures that you will probably need a lifetime to uncover! More than 3000 large and small caves, untrodden rocky coasts, vast sandy beaches, and pebbled shores define the seaside. Dry-stone farm buildings, villages perching on high plateaus, monasteries, isolated castles and chapels dot the countryside. Old cities hide behind walls, their complicated narrow alleys winding past squares, churches, and the ruins of palaces.

Perched where the continents of Asia, Africa and Europe meet, Crete sits approximately 230 miles south of mainland Greece. With an area of about 3,300 square miles, Crete is divided into four prefectures (or districts) -- Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Lasithi -- which quarter the island from west to east. Each prefecture is home to one of Crete`s major cities, which are all located on the northern coast: The port town of Chania, built on top of ancient Kydonia, picturesque Rethymnon, noisy Heraklion, cosmopolitan Agios Nikolaos, and beautiful Sitia grew up on the north side of the island and only peaceful Ierapetra is on the shores of the Libyan Sea, facing Africa.
