Former capital of the country, Debrecen is Hungary's second city. It is surnamed "The Calvinist Rome," because the inhabitants converted to the new faith in the 16th century, and the town became the centre of Calvinism. The symbolic pride of Debrecen is the Reformed Great Church, a reminder of several important events of Hungarian history. Another sight is the Town Hall - one of the finest examples of Classical architecture in Hungary. Situated in the north-eastern point of Lake Balaton, Balatonalmádi is a picturesque holiday resort. The green heart of Hévíz, the 4.4-ha lake is the world's biggest warm-water lake where bathing is possible. The ruins of one of the most significant settlement of the Roman Empire, which was inhabited for almost four centuries, from the first half of the 1st century to the beginning of the 5th century, are hidden under the ground in the Egregy district. The Roman ruins garden is a public establishment and can be visited without restriction.

Keszthely is the oldest town around Lake Balaton. The main attraction of the town is represented by the magnificent Baroque Festetics Castle. Its park and rooms host important concerts, music master classes in the summer months. The park, an example of English landscape gardening, contains many rare plants and flowers. The Balaton Museum is another sight, its display cases depicting the formation of the lake, its flora and fauna, archaeological discoveries. The Roman Catholic Church dating back from the Middle Ages is a must see. Its frescoes are considered to be among the finest works of Hungarian Gothic.

Siofok is one of the busiest tourist centers on Lake Balaton and also one of the richest municipalities of Hungary. It has several beaches and a scenic port. On the Northern part stands the statue of Vilt Tibor, named Mermaid of Lake Balaton. In the centre of Siófok on the Szabadság square the 45 m high Water tower (the symbol of the town) rises. Don't miss the Fogas baroque building, which is considered to be one of the most valuable architectural heritages of Siofok. The everlasting works of Imre Kálmán, the famous son of this town, can be listened in the Cultural Centre

Zalakaros is an 800 years old town that became famous 35 years ago for its discovered thermal water. This healing water contains sulphur hydrogen, brome, hydrogen carbon and iodine. The covered bath is open during the whole year; the thermal bath surrounded by big nicely well-kept parks operates only in the season. Eger is one of the most wonderful baroque towns in Hungary. It is also famous for its thermal baths and for its excellent red and white wines. The most impressive building is the classicist Archbishop's Cathedral - the second largest church in Hungary. On the first floor of the late-baroque Lyceum, you will find one of the most famous libraries in the country, with ornamental carvings and wonderful ceiling-frescos. The Main Bishopric Library has 130,000 volumes, including the first book printed in Hungary (in 1473), and a letter written by Mozart. In the tower you can find the country's first astronomical museum, the Spekula Observatory.

Located at the foot of the Mecsek Hills, Pecs is a 2000-year-old town with the Mediterranean climate. Former known as Sopianae in Roman times, Pecs was a significant centre of early Christianity: the 4th century "necropolis" consisting of 16 graves was acknowledged by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2000. Two monuments are open to the public: Hungary's most significant early Christian monument, the Ancient Christian Mausoleum with its wall paintings, and the remains of three sarcophagi. Other points of interest are the city walls and the Mosque of Pascha Gázi Kassim.

Bükfürdő is famous all over Europe for its spa baths discovered in 1957. Its oldest buildings are 'Lakotorony', built in the 13th century, and the Gothic 'Doczy Chapel', built in the 15th century. The symbol of the town, the Iron Cock, can be admired in Duna-kapu Square. The Town Museum collection exhibits Greek and Roman ornaments, furniture in Renaissance and baroque style, sculpture, paintings and Chinese porcelain.

Located along the River Rába, Sarvar is home to one of the most beautiful museums in the country - the Ferenc Nadasdy Museum. Beginning from the 16th century, this castle served as a fortress and aristocratic family residence. Besides the luxurious furnishings, the special features of the castle are the seventeenth-century frescos depicting battle scenes in the wars against the Turks and an abundant collection of applied art. The town is also famous for its medicinal and leisure baths, and the medicinal water containing mineral salts.

Located near the western borders of Hungary, at the foot of the Alps, Sopron creates a bridge between Hungary and its western neighbors, opening a gate for foreign guests visiting Hungary.
